Hi, I’m Amy and I’m an events producer in addition to the work I do as a Public Ally. I’m extremely passionate about bringing people together in celebration to a shared love of the Arts and life experiences. Transitioning from the Art world to community legal work through Public Allies has been interesting. It’s day and night. But I'm glad I made the change. Coming into PANY I thought I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to work on economic development. After the first few months, I realized that this didn't fulfill me as much as I’d hoped. Luckily things changed and I caught a second wind to do work that was meant for me all along. I am the Community Outreach Coordinator at Catholic Migration Services (CMS). I came in with enthusiasm to build capacity with my experience – what I didn’t expect was to be faced with my past. I am learning how common it is for tenants to be mistreated and that there are options and laws that protect us. The things I’ve learned at CMS can be shared with friends, family and even strangers I cross paths with. Here I have an opportunity to help, even in the smallest way, to help prevent eviction. Being forced out of your home is traumatic, and I’ve dealt with it three times growing up in New York. I never knew we had so many rights and that those events were illegal and very preventable. I am an advocate for tenant empowerment, economic development and preserving community. As an Ally, I have been able to nurture that and learn so much more than I could have on my own, all while working with compassionate Program Managers and fellow Allies. Thank you for this wonderful experience!
