My name is Caleb and I’m a Public Ally from the class of 2016. I have been very fortunate with my partner organization, The Street Vendor Project. Despite joining the program mid-year, my time here has been very enriching thus far. The wonderful staff at The Street Vendor Project and the vendors I work with on a daily basis make this a deeply meaningful experience. Vendors are mostly immigrants, people of color, and people from low-income neighborhoods. They turn to vending as a means to support their families and to deal with the harsh economic climate that is New York City. The work that we do at Street Vendor Project serves to give a voice to those who are often overlooked by society and get treated unfairly due to the way the system is set up. If we do not push back against the forces that continue to perpetuate this cycle of racism and oppression then things will never change. Gandhi said, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world. If we want to change the world we must first look within….from the individual level to humanity as a whole.
