My name is Farriangie Dorce and I am a Second Year with Public Allies New York. I am current placed at ImpacctBrooklyn, formerly known as Pratt Area Community Council. As the Community Outreach Coordinator, I have aided tenants fight to keep and sustain their homes in Brooklyn, particularly in highly gentrifying areas. I also lead weekly tenant rights workshops with numerous buildings in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights and Clinton Hill. To be able to lead workshops and calm tenants when things become hectic takes a lot of confidence and trust in myself that I’m doing my job well and in a manner that builds trust between the tenant and me. In the past two years, I have strived to continue building my confidence and leadership skills as they have a great impact in my time with ImpacctBrooklyn and will have lasting impact in my future endeavors. Being a leader is about building confidence in yourself. I challenge everyone to make an effort to become comfortable with themselves. And that can happen in numerous ways, maybe building the body you’ve dreamed of by working out consistently, or becoming an expert in something you love. Or simply making a list of everything you like and making the conscious effort to embrace the things it will take to accomplish those things, and not fight yourself because of fear of what others may think. Each of these activities can build confidence in someone and will contribute to growing into the best leader a person can be.
