My name is Kary Jolivert. I am a native of New York City and a recent graduate of SUNY Oswego. While I am not trying to find the pizza in the city, I spend my time working at the Women Center for Education and Career Advancement as a Self Sufficiency Associate. My understanding of poverty and privilege within communities has been based on my own experiences rather than formal learning. While working here at the Women’s Center, I have had the great opportunity to expand my knowledge on income and equality. Through my research of data and statistics on living wages and basic needs, I have come to realize that the majority of working class families cannot fully support themselves. Even though benefits and support are in place to assist in meeting basic needs, many families do not take advantage of these resources because of the stigmas attached to receiving these services.
