I am Kyrie Hills, a member of the 2015-2016 Public Allies New York cohort. I am placed at FAB Alliance, and serve the communities of Fort Greene and Clinton Hill in Brooklyn. One of the biggest things I’ve learned is that stepping out of your comfort zone can be the best thing that can happen to you. I never thought that I would be a leader in a community and actively looking forward to the events and activities I have put together with FAB Alliance. Some of the challenges the neighborhood of Clinton Hill faces is gentrification, and it’s evident that people of color are being pushed out and room is trying to be made for newcomers. Sometimes residents who feel like they are being pushed out feel as though the events we have are not for them. I do my best to reassure them that the events are for them and ask them what other activities they would like to see out on Fulton Street. Trusting the process has been my biggest accomplishment because I was not completely sure what I had gotten myself into, but I am ever thankful to the Process and to Public Allies New York for allowing me to grow and expand on the leader that I am. Next for me, I will continue to work in the city and create leaders in our youth and also continue to hold events while I prepare myself for graduate school where I will be pursuing my Masters in Science in Mental Health, Counseling in Couples, Families and Children. I want to leave you with what I have learned this year: Break Out of every box you have put yourself in, It's time to allow You to be you and for You to be free, and also TRUST THE PROCESS!!
