I, Nasiyr, am a Public Ally of New York for 2016. As a part of this journey I've been a community organizer for Flatbush Tenant Coalition. The process has been a unique combination of experiences, struggles and successes that have allowed me to see my growth in real time. I've been cultured very much through PANY trainings, conversations and projects with my colleagues. I've also learned a lot about the power dynamics and inner workings of gentrification and the landlord-tenant relationship in general. Having all of these experiences concurrently, plus existing in spaces that I always have, has given me a much sharper vision of the “big picture” in the world around me. It has also taught me more empathy and understanding for people whose lives I have less in common with. This growth was probably inevitable and necessary for this process, but it's amazingly interesting how well this applies to my life in general. It was an experience that I didn't know I needed until I received it. I started off believing I didn't deserve to be a part of this process, and now I'm arriving at the end with pleasantly long lasting tools and memories.
